We light the candles, we gorge on jelly donuts, but the presents are strictly an Anglo (Israeli term for English-speaker) thing. The holiday barely gets any notice. As you hinted, it's only noticed in the States because of its timing.

You said: Incidentally, could you imagine the hell a Jew would catch from a gentile boss if he/she asked off work for Shavuot (a two-day holiday where you're not supposed to work)? It's hard enough to get off for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This annoys me.

I wonder if that's how it is in North Carolina? I never had any problems in that regard when I lived in Michigan, although I did have to dip into my vacation days. Mostly, I just had make sure that appointments were scheduled appropriately.

And commenter Mike: Us Jews don't have too many holidays. We just like to celebrate.Michaelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01314897574215489135noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7603499.post-86970318954683045702007-02-26T09:32:00.000-05:002007-02-26T09:32:00.000-05:00All I learned from this post is that you Jews have...All I learned from this post is that you Jews have way too many freaking holidays.

Ben, I'm gonna have to agree with Jeff on James Taylor.
