Crumblin' Down

20 years ago today...

Anyway, here's an article Balko linked to claiming that totalitarian communism killed 100,000,000 people over the course of the last century, mainly through forced-labor camps but also through massacres, genocide, and famine. Worth remembering.

Obligatory Jesus Jones link here.

Update: Just for Mike, here's the Scorpions.

The first two songs I thought of today were the Scorpions' "Wind of Change" and David Bowie's "Heroes". Which really beats the everloving shit out of Jesus Jones.

I thought about "Wind of Change," but it was more about the Soviet Union specifically. Didn't know "Heroes" was about that...

Jeff, I'm about to destroy your rep.

You combined my hatred of communism, my appreciation of The Scorpions and my love of ballads in a single post. Cudos.

The story goes that Bowie saw a couple kissing by the Berlin Wall while he was recording in Germany. Hence, "I remember / standing by the wall / the guards shot above our heads / and we kissed as though nothing could fall..."

I pretty much hummed it the entire time while I was walking through Berlin a few years ago.
